Tomato Hornworm - Part III

I took these pictures last night. See my previous post titled, "Tomato Hornworm" to see how this dude has grown in just over one week - it's amazing.

The smaller one I posted about in "Tomato Hornworm - Part II". This is the little guy that had the parasitic wasp cocoons all over him. However, as you can see in the picture below these cocoons have all fallen off but you can see the marks or tatoos left behind where they were attached. Now this little guy appears to be eating just fine but not growing much at all. Perhaps, the cocoons did some damage before falling off.

wow, they're huge! They look plump and juicy.

Fried Hornworms
Ingredients:
3 tablespoons olive oil
16 tomato hornworms
4 medium green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
Salt and pepper to taste
White cornmeal

Directions:
In a large skillet or wok, heat the oil. Then lightly fry the hornworms, about 4 minutes, taking care not to rupture the cuticles of each insect under high heat. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Season tomato rounds with salt and pepper, then coat with cornmeal on both sides. In a large skillet, fry tomatoes until lightly browned on both sides. Top each round with 2 fried tomato hornworms. Garnish the paired hornworms with a single basil leaf.

Mmmmmm them's good eating! ;-)

Interesting, very interesting. Who would have ever thunk of such a thing?!

I've tasted a Witchetty grug before but I'm gonna draw the line there...
