2011 Delicious!

Our raspberries are coming in and they're out-of-this-world scrumptious!

So much so that for the first time in our 12 years here the grey squirrels are raiding them. There are plenty out there so sharing isn't the problem. The problem is that these tree climbing pains-in-the-assess are destroying the plants. They attempt to climb them but of course the plants are not designed to supports these pests so they bend and break, UGH!

Oh My Ach'n Back

After 8 years of living here at the ole homestead, I finally devoted some time and tended to our raspberries in a way that should have been done years ago. I edged the beds, pulled out the previous owners soaker hoses, tightened the cloth line supports and spent many hours on my hands and knees weeding. Once this was completed I spread two heaping wheel barrels full of rich, dark compost on the beds.

The wild critters, i.e. wild rabbits and slugs (insects), have almost no place to hide now. The new raspberries plants can sprout and grow without competing with weeds, flowers, rocks and other obstacles.

I'm hoping this all means a bumper crop of delicious raspberries this year, as well as years to come - mmm mmm good!

Getting Ready: Raspberries 2008

Here are our two rows of raspberries, each row approximately 50' long.

I've spent a couple days in our raspberries doing some spring cleanup and getting the beds and plants ready for their summer production. We have two different kinds of raspberries; one is red and the other is orange. Both are tasty, with the orange ones being sweeter. However, I do not know what kind of plants these are, so that's next on my list; determine the raspberry types.

I cut out the old, dead stocks and topped all remaining plants to remove last years dead growth. I also weeded as best I could and spread compost throughout giving them some good, rich organic food. There are no excuse now for poor performance unless Mother Nature pulls a fast one.

Remember, raspberry plants are biennial, which means that the first year they are vegetative only and don't produce fruit.

Raspberries, they're here...

Golden Raspberries

It's that time of the summer when our Golden Raspberries make their appearance and let me tell you it's a delicious time too! Our Red Raspberries won't be far behind and will be following soon. These bad boys on vanilla ice cream just can't be beat! Although, vanilla ice cream with Bailey's Irish Cream poured over top comes pretty close!
