Gillette Stadium Blood Donation Day!

This past Saturday (12/10) the American Red Cross, Bob's Discount Furniture store and the 10 & 3 New England Patriots held their annual blood drive at Gillette Stadium. What a great take! The donation and all activities were held in the new "Putnam Club" luxury suite, which overlooks the playing field!!
I made my appointment for first thing in the morning, 8AM, to get there early before the crowd. While I was donating and hooked up to the double-red machine, JoAnne and Emilie were tooling around and taking in the other offerings, i.e. face painting, puppet show, getting autographs and taking pictures with some of the Patriot cheerleaders and retired New England Patriot players - Joe Andruzzi and John Smith. There were all kinds of snacks, hourly raffles to win furniture and autographed Pats items and a great view of the stadium and field.

Here is a picture of Joe Andruzzi's left hand, which is adorned with one of his Superbowl rings, WOW! The three of us each posed for a picture with him and each time he took off his ring and let us put it on, incredible! JoAnne was gonna make a run for it but thought better of it. Wouldn't want him running you down... He was a super nice guy, very personable, and extra special with Emilie when it was her turn for a picture - a class act!

It was an excellent take and all for a good cause too! Can't wait to do it again next year.

My 1st Blood Donation of 2011
I scheduled a 9:00AM appointment to donate, and once again did the Double-Red Cell donation. So, JoAnne, Emilie and I took off for the garden first thing in the morning. After check in I was hurried off to get connected and begin the blood draw. Meanwhile JoAnne and Emilie went upstairs to take in the many kid friendly activities including face painting, balloon artist and puppet show among others.
Blades, the Bruins mascot, Buddy the Blood Drop, the Bruins Ice Girls and the Celtics Dancers were in attendance and available pictures. Also, some past Bruin and Celtic greats were on hand. We met, got autographs and pictures with:

It was a good take! We had a great time, got a tour of the locker rooms and in the end was able to help someone with my donation.

ARC - "Day of Remembrance"
OK, I changed things up a little bit and did something nice this past weekend - surprise surprise!
The American Red Cross had a "Day of Remembrance" (Remember those lost so that others may survive) blood drive this past Saturday September 11, 2010 that was held at Fenway Park - home to our Boston Red Sox!
So, I signed up to donate, scheduled a 9:15AM appointment and JoAnne, Emilie and I went in. I did the Double Red Cell donation, which is similar to Whole blood donation, except a machine is used to allow you to safely donate two units of red blood cells while returning your plasma and platelets back to you. This process takes 20 - 30 minutes longer but very much worth it. Also, double red donaters get special treatment. For example, I was moved to the head of the line during the checkin process, then shuffled off to a special area for the donation. At this event the special area was one of six highly priced sky box suites that over looked the ball field on the right field line and each with their own balcony, kitchen, seating area with 50+" flat screen TV and bathroom, WOW! Gives you some insight on how the other half live.
The ball park was a beehive of activity with what looked like a tremendous turnout. The American Red Cross was looking to break the record by collecting 1,000 units of blood - not sure how many units were collected but I'd guess the record was broken.
It was nice to be in the ball park without the chaos of the game day crowds and get to take it all in. It's a beautiful park and the day was picture perfect as you can see below.

Donate Today!
I gave blood today at work - 1 pint. It's now your turn! Consider yourself officially asked. One blood donation can help save up to 3 lives. Only 5% of eligible Americans give blood. Every 2 seconds someone in America needs blood. Less than 30% of the people who give blood once will ever give blood again. Donated blood only lasts for 42 days. You can donate blood as many as 6 times a year. There is a 97% chance that someone you know will need a blood transfusion.
