'PILL-ee-ay-tid' Woodpecker

I spy with my little eye...

Way up there perched atop that thar Aspen tree -

A Pileated woodpecker!



Not a rare sight but Pileated woodpeckers a relatively uncommon, as they're a shier bird. 

Pileated woodpeckers is the largest woodpecker in North American and are the third largest species of woodpecker in the world.  "Pileated" refers to the bird's prominent red crest, from the Latin pileatus meaning "capped" -


This is a female and she was very content to sit up there and preen herself -
