Bugs Bunny Knows What I'm Talking About!

On Sunday, May 25th I planted two 4' rows of carrots -

Caged and fenced in they survived the wild rabbit invasion and assault -

I hand watered them every couple of days throughout the hot summer -

97 days later, today Sunday, August, 31, I harvested said carrots -

Although, I've trimmed them and brought them inside, they're still sitting next to the sink.  That's tomorrow morning project to wash, count, bag and get then in the refrigerator.

The yield all cleaned -

Can't beat the feeling and satisfaction of harvesting something you've grown from seed and tended to all summer long.  I can already tell these are gonna be delicious too! By the way, where did the 97 days go?!

Hello?! Hey, Where Did Everybody Go?!

It's been a weird, eerie kinda summer.

My veggies are struggling.
I haven't seen or had a single frog in my pool.
I've only seen one or two toads.
No snakes.
Signs deer have visited but I seldom see them like I used to.
Wild rabbits galore, too many.
There's been only a handful of honey bees visiting my flowers.
Butterflies have been scarce, with only a couple Monarch.
NOT a single Monarch caterpillar on all of my big beautiful milkweed plants.

On a positive note, I was awakened the other morning by the vocals of two Barred Owls talking to each other.  Alas, it was 4:00AMish and dark, so I was unable to see them but they were sitting in the oak trees in my front yard having a conversation!

I sat by the open window and listened to them for while.  So cool and peaceful.

There was no use in going back to bed at that point, instead I brewed a cup of coffee and started my day.

"The early bird gets the worm", they say...

My First Red Ripe Tomater!

I picked my first ripe tomato this afternoon after work -

Immediately diced it up -

Added diced red onion, sliced black olives, feta cheese, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper -

Placed in the refrigerator for an hour or so (truth be told I couldn't wait any longer) to chill.  Then ate about half with my pasta dinner.

OMG, SO amazingly delicious!

I'm salivating knowing that fresh tomato BLTs are literally right around the corner!

2025 Veggie Season Has Officially Begun!

And we're off!

I spent the morning and early afternoon visiting my farmer friend Tim down in Marshfield; a LONG overdue visit.

Per usual I never leave his place empty handed, rather always with plants and work to do once I get back home and today was no exception.

He sent me home with oodles of plants, veggies and flowers!

Once home, I planted (8) California Sweet Bell Peppers and (12) Cucumber, see above.  The cucs were too small to try and separate, so I simply planted them in the groups they were in.  I will cull them back once I see which ones look the best after getting settled.

More planting work to come and more pics and postings too...

One Last Tomato Hurrah!

These are the last of my home grown tomatoes, alas.

They were the remaining green tomatoes on the plants, when I pulled the plants out for composting.

They've been sitting here on my counter slowly ripening!

Looks like tonight's homemade pizza will be the end of these, as they're starting to go bad.  However, I'll use what I can and savior each bite.  Can't wait!

That's A Wrap!

I harvested my carrots on Saturday!

I would have preferred to let them go a bit longer, with nice weather predicted for the coming week, but something started eating the tops, so I opted to dig them.  That officially closes out my vegetable gardens for the season.

This was my third planting of carrots.  My previous two didn't have much of a chance with the darn wild rabbits, however.  As you can see, still not the greatest harvest, as most are tiny with the bigger ones still small but no worries.

I washed them, cut them up and into the crockpot them went on Sunday morning with other veggies and a nice turkey breast!  A terrific early afternoon meal!

A little hanky-panky going on with these two but they did form a lovely heart -

"What's Up Doc?"

The only vegetable I have left in my garden are the above carrots!

I've cut and removed all other veggie plants and remnants from my gardens and moved them to the compost bin.

This carrots are my third planting of the year.  The rabbits did a number on my previous plantings, UGH!  Hoping I get enough to fire up the old crockpot to make a nice beef stew.

I'll do a closer inspection this weekend to see if there are in fact carrots under those tops.

Preserved To Enjoy Later

I will call this "Poor Mans Canning".

I have oodles and oodles of tomatoes coming out of my ears!  Seems like they ripened all of a sudden too.

I've been eating them as best I can - BLTs, Greek tomato salads, toping my pizzas with them, adding them to my cooking and yet I still don't seem to be making a dent.

SO, yesterday I spent several hours preparing and freezing well over 30 of this delicious dudes!

A quick, less than 4 minutes, dip in boiling water, which loosens the skin to where it easily falls right off -

My work area -

Once skinned, I cut up into cubes, removing the seeds (as best that would just fall off) and removed the harder innards -

Tossed the pieces and parts, along with salt, into some containers and into the freezer they went -

When the days are short and it's cold outside, I can pull one of this bad boys out, thaw and enjoy in a sauce or some dish, MMM MMM GOOD!

It's THAT Time Of The Year!

I made my way out to the garden yesterday afternoon to pick some of my veggies and I was NOT disappointed.

Just like last year, I am being overrun with bell peppers.  There are oodles of them!  These six below are about the size of a softball!  So BIG and beautiful!  I'll be heading to the market today to pick up the fix'ns to make stuff peppers -

My first ears of corn, three Yukon Gold potatoes and some tomatoes!

The potatoes grew from a single plant that sprouted from a potato I missed from last years growing season.  It remained dormant all winter long, then took off when things warmed up.  I doted this plant it and it rewarded me with three small taters, which I will make into fries and enjoy -

One of my all time favorites is Silver Queen corn, to die for!  There are oodles more out there too and I can't wait to sink my teeth into each and every one -

YUP, I ate ALL five pieces last night -

My diner last night, a scrumptious BLT, corn on the cob and a frosty beer! You just cannot beat home grown veggies, SO tender and juicy -

BLT #1 of 2024

Made, ate and enjoyed my first BLT of the season yesterday!

So bloody delicious too!

I'd make and eat more if my tomatoes would ripen faster...

It's Green Bean Time!

I picked my first batch of green beans yesterday afternoon!

A nice haul, that I will be cooking up and enjoying in the next couple of days.

Even though I've added a second fence around my raised veggie beds, I'm having a time with the wild rabbits still making their way in and doing quite a number on both my carrots and beans.  Had they not done so much damaged there would have been twice, maybe even three times more beans to pick.

It's a frustrating battle but as long as I am able to harvest and enjoy some of my plantings it'll have to suffice.

To Die For! SO SO Yummy!

I went with the Greek tomato salad, like my mother used to make!

I like to peel the skin off of the tomatoes before cutting them up and tossing them in a bowl with feta cheese, red onion and Kalamata olives.  Add some salt, pepper, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, stir and let chill in the fridge.

OMG!  It was SO delicious and I ate the whole thing in one sitting!  And yes, of course I used some fresh bread to "buta buta" and soak up the scrumptious juices!

I'm heading out shortly to see if there are more ripe tomatoes out there in my garden so I can make another salad.

First Of The Season!

Seems like I planted my tomato plants several weeks ago but in reality it's been several months!

My hard work, hand watering and dotting is starting to pay off with signs of the fruits (pun intended) of my labors.

Here are the first tomatoes of the season, picked yesterday evening!

Can't wait to dig in and enjoy these bad boys but undecided on how, BLTs or a play on the Greek tomato salad (feta and red onion) that my mom used to make...

Consequences To Ones Actions

Frye's garden NOT McGregors but same rules apply!

Although, this youngster was not the one responsible for eating my carrot and bean plants, see below, I can assure you it will never have the opportunity to do so in the future -

I even installed a fence around my raised vegetable beds specifically to keep the rabbits and deer out, which makes the damage and loss that much more frustrating!

One section of my beans and one example of the damage done, GRRR -

Similar example but with my carrots, double GRRR -

They even do a number of my Rose Campion plants, triple GRRR -

For such small critters, it's amazing the damage they can do and in such a short time.  I can look out off my back deck and often see 2, 3, 4 or 5 rabbits at a time.  There are oodles of them this summer, far too many.

“What's up, doc?"

There are scads of wild rabbits this year here in New England!  I don't recall ever seeing SO many.  Guessing it might have something to do with the mild winters we've had the last couple of years.

As many folks view these rabbits as cute, I find them a nuisance in general but more so when you're having to battle with them to keep them destroying your flower and vegetable gardens.

There are about a half dozen of these vermin in my backyard alone.  They disappear during the day but come out in the evenings and early mornings when it's cooler and do constant damage, GRRR

This Rose Campion is one example, where they eat parts of it snapping the flowering stems off -

They like to give themselves dirt baths, so any bare spots are attractive to them.  They'll get in those spots, dig and roll around making a mess, especially if in one of my veggie gardens.  Smaller, up and coming plants like my carrots and beans don't stand a chance.

If they survive that onslaught, well then its the taste that attracts them.  I even installed a separate fence around my raised beds specifically to keep these vermin out but they still find a way in, and once in they make short work of eating plants to the ground.  You can see what they've done to my bean plants -

But fear not for my persistence has paid off, GOTCHA!

This trapped pest was the one who had an acquired taste for my bean and carrot plants, which proved to be his downfall!

One down and SO many more to go and like Carl Spackler said in Caddyshack (just replace "gophers" with "rabbits") -

"Licensed to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. A man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote."

A row of carrots -

Tomato Canning, Of Sorts...

It was a wet summer here in New England, the complete opposite of the summer of 2022. The lawn and plants loved it, with everything looking nice and green.

My veggies did well too, for the most part. Even though I ate scads of BLTs and tomato salads, and adorned my Friday night pizzas with fresh cut tomatoes, I lost so many more, which I attribute to the weather.  Some days and weeks too much rain, others very little and I think the inconsistency contributed to the loss.  That and the deer seemed to take more of a fancy to my tomatoes this season than in the past.

Anyway, in an effort to try and salvage the remaining tomatoes, I picked what I could; the good and the bad, cut them up, cored them, gave them a quick boil, then peeled them and cut them up for freezing.  Yes, this is not canning but hoping I can use these in the crock pot this coming winter.

Here are a couple of the batches I saved and froze -

I will be gearing up for next season and plan on taking a stab at actual "canning" of my tomatoes.  I have everything I need, will just need to do some homework on my options and the methods but rest assured, I'll be ready!

Eggplant Overrun!

I am being over run with oodles of eggplants!

This is my first year growing and they have done fantastic. They have loved the rainy, hot and humid weather we've had.

I bought (3) good looking plants from a local farm and they took off almost as soon as I got them out of their pots and into the soil.

If I only liked eggplant, alas...

My dad planted them every year and my folks enjoyed them, but being the fussy eater I was growing up, I never ventured even a taste.  So, here we are many, many years later and I've still never ventured even the tiniest bite of eggplant.  Perhaps, some day.

Homemade Pizza Pie !

Friday night is usually my pizza night, however, due to poor planning on my part my dinner options were all frozen.  So, pizza night was moved up a day.

After mowing the lawn tonight, and before heading inside, I went to my garden and picked a juicy, plump tomato and a bell pepper. These incredibly fresh veggies and some of my own garlic, picked back in July, made their way onto tonight's homemade pizza, along with some ham!

The fresh veggies make such a BIG difference!

YUP, I ate the entire pizza!  Well, Trixie helped too.

Black Beauty - Update

Here is an update to my "Black Beauty" posting from June 6 -

I picked these beauties on Monday evening!

These eggplant plants I have are doing tremendous.  The plants are so healthy, BIG and beautiful with oodles of eggplants on each.

Wish I liked eggplant...
